8 to reinstate the NFF executive committee or face a ban.
An order by a court in the northern city of Jos had given an interlocutors judgement
suspending the NFF and directing the Sports Minister to appoint a caretaker to
run the affairs of the federation, an order which was carried out within hours
of the judgement.
Furthermore, NFF president Aminu Maigari was arrested and detained by security
operatives on his arrival to the country on Friday.
But Fifa are having none of it. In a letter titled “Interference in the
Internal Affairs of the Nigerian Football Federation”, the world football
governing body highlighted its displeasure at the recent developments.
The letter made it clear that Fifa would not recognize the current leadership
appointed by the minister and warned that the affairs of member bodies are to
be conducted independently without interference by the government.
It called for the reinstatement of the executive committee board and warned of
dire consequences if things were not returned to status quo by Tuesday, July 8
Expected sanction will include suspending Nigeria from all FIFA-organized
competitions and including those of member organizations like CAF.
The immediate consequence will be that Nigeria will be unable to take part in
the qualifiers for the 2015 African Nations Cup, while the women’s and boys
teams will be unable to compete at the coming age-grade competitions.
