Gov. Umahi sacks Ebonyi varsity bursar, suspends ASUU chairman

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has sacked the varsity bursar for misconduct and suspended the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of University, Ebonyi varsity chapter, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi.

The governor also suspended the immediate past chairman of ASUU in the institution, Prof. Emeka Nwakpu, for alleged misinformation on government policies concerning the university.

The governor issued the directive in Abakaliki, the state capital in a state wide broadcast on Wednesday, on the lingering crisis between the government and members of the union.

“The reappointment of the bursar for a second tenure did not follow due process and lacks constitutionality,” Umahi said.

Umahi also announced the freezing of the accounts of the institution with effect from Wednesday, October 19, 2016.

“Nobody should receive salary in the university till further notice; the tenure of the leadership of ASUU in the university has elapsed and I will not talk to them because it is an illegal executive,” he said.

“I here by direct the state commissioner for education to relocate to the university on Monday, and open an attendance register for lecturers regarding compliance to duties.”

He, however, appealed to the striking lecturers to suspend the industrial action and go back to work immediately.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of University, Ebonyi State chapter, started an indefinite strike on Monday over the alleged inability of the state government to meet their eight-point demands, bothering on gazetting of the employers of the university.
